How The Travel Agency Celebrates Mother’s Day With Cannabis

There’s a version of Mother’s Day that exists in commercials. Breakfast in bed that nobody made a mess making. Flowers that arrived on time. A card that said exactly the right thing.

We asked three of our general managers to tell us what an ideal Mother’s Day morning looks like for themselves, their wives, and the women who shaped them. Here’s what they said.

My ideal Mother’s Day morning starts quietly, but not alone. I wake up slowly, the kind of wake-up where you don’t check the time because nothing is waiting for you — not work, not responsibilities, just the people I love. For the first time in a long time, my daughter and her wife are home. Not just visiting, but Feleesha is there in the kitchen like she used to be. I smell coffee before I see her.

She brings it in, just how I like it, and makes the inside joke we’ve shared for years: “Just the way you like it, Ma.” She has only ever called me Mom when she’s mad at me. She puts out her arm to show me the coffee has just enough cream to match her skin tone. The perfect blend. Her dad + me = perfection (her), in coffee and in people. She hands it to me with that same little smile that somehow still makes her feel five years old and fully grown at the same time, a moment that reminds me why I will always call her Kid.

And then, because life has a sense of humor and so do we, she hands me a perfectly rolled blunt. Years ago, I would’ve hidden that part of myself. Now, it feels like trust and evolution, like we’ve made it somewhere honest together.

By the time I make it out of bed, breakfast is already done. Her dad — my best friend — is in the kitchen finishing up something warm and sweet, with fresh fruit and whipped cream he made himself because he knows it matters to me. No one is asking me for anything. No one needs me to solve a problem. They’re just taking care of me.

The music is soft — Tori Amos’s “Little Earthquakes.” I know that album doesn’t scream “soft,” but my family knows that’s the music that quiets my brain. The vibe is calm, unhurried, and a little indulgent. We’re laughing about nothing, eating basically cake for breakfast, moving slowly, sinking into the couches with blankets, and letting the morning stretch.
