New York City is known for cannabis — but exactly how much weed can you buy at once? The answer may surprise you. Hint: It’s a lot.

How much flower can you buy per visit to The Travel Agency?

You can buy up to 3 ounces of cannabis flower if you are over 21 years old with a proper ID.

This three-ounce limit includes whole flower, pre-ground flower, or pre-rolled joints in any combination. The high limit is great for stocking up if you want to make fewer trips to the dispensary (or don’t want to keep calling delivery).

Three ounces of cannabis flower is equal to 84 grams. Most people buy flower in eighths (3.5 grams) or in pre-rolls, which range from 0.5 to 1 grams. Each of these purchases is a fraction of the legal limit.

For most people, three ounces of cannabis would last for several weeks or up to a few months. Buying three ounces of cannabis flower means you could roll 168 half-gram joints, or pack a bowl more than 150 times.

How many vapes can you buy per visit?

New York cannabis laws cap concentrates purchases at 24 grams per transaction, which includes vapes. It’s a generous amount.

Vapes in New York are sold in a few sizes: 0.3 grams, 0.5 grams, and 1 gram. This means you could buy:

24 1-gram vapes or vape carts

48 0.5-gram vapes or vape carts

80 0.3-gram vapes or vape carts

This amount can last you several months or up to a year, depending on your tolerance and needs. Vapes are pretty shelf-stable too; if you store your vapes correctly, buying this many in a single transaction can last you quite a long time.

How many edibles can you buy per visit?

Edibles are infused with concentrate, which puts them under the 24-gram concentrate limit. However, edibles are dosed in milligrams and 1 gram is equivalent to 1,000 mg. This basically means you can purchase a lot of edibles at once.

Packs of edibles are capped at 100 mg of THC in New York, so you would have to buy 10 packs of 100 mg edibles to hit your legal limit of 1,000 mg of edibles per transaction. It doesn’t matter if the edibles contain 10 mg per serving or 100 mg per serving — they’re all a part of the limit.

How many beverages can you buy per visit?

Like edibles, cannabis beverages fall under the concentrate limit and are measured in milligrams. If you’re buying beverages containing 5 mg per can, you would have to buy 200 drinks at once to hit the daily weed purchase limit.

In short, you don’t have to worry too much about hitting the purchase limits on edibles and beverages during your visits to The Travel Agency (unless you’re inviting over your 200 closest friends — in which case, carry on).

How much concentrate can you buy per visit?

You can buy up to 24 grams of concentrate per visit to The Travel Agency. In New York, concentrates are sold in half-gram and one-gram quantities. This means you can buy between 24 and 48 packages of concentrates at once, depending on the size. Given the potency of concentrates and the general serving size, 24 grams of concentrate would last you a long time.

How many topicals can you buy per visit?

Topicals also fall under the 24-gram concentrate limit. How many topicals you can buy per dispensary visit depends on how potent they are.

Some brands infuse their topicals with large amounts of THC, up to 1,000 mg. But 1,000 mg is just one gram, so you could buy up to 24 topicals at once. Other brands have much lower potencies in their topical formulations, so you can buy more at one time.

Can you mix and match the products you buy?

Yes, you can mix and match the products you buy at The Travel Agency, but the total still needs to be at or under the legal limit. So you can’t buy 3 ounces of flower and 24 grams of concentrate in one shopping trip. However, you can buy up to the 3 ounce equivalent or the 24-gram equivalent when combined.

What is the legal limit to carry weed in NY?

You can carry as much weed as you can buy at once: up to 3 ounces of flower and 24 grams of concentrate.

But possession laws in residences are much more lenient: you can have up to five pounds of cannabis flower within the boundaries of your property (the limit on concentrates remains the same.) Five pounds is a lot of flower, and you usually won’t see that much.

And speaking of homegrown, New York residents can grow up to six plants per person and up to 12 plants per household, with no more than half of the plants flowering at one time.

Medical cannabis patients have different purchase limits, but they must be registered patients and shop at designated medical dispensaries to reach these limits.

Can you smoke weed anywhere in New York City?

No, you cannot smoke weed anywhere you want to in New York City. You can smoke weed anywhere you can smoke tobacco, but acceptable areas are limited to:

Private property (your home or a friend’s, but this doesn’t apply to all rentals)

Consumption lounges once opened

Certain areas of public property where signs for smoking are posted

Sidewalks that are at least 100 feet away from hospitals, daycare, schools, churches, and libraries

NYC defines smoking as all forms of inhalation, so vapes are not exempt from smoking limitations, even though they’re “smoke-free.”
