Hudson Cannabis

Melany and Freya Dobson are the dynamic duo behind Hudson Cannabis. The sisters always appreciated the plant but never seriously considered a career in cannabis. However, fate had other plans.

After college, Melany ventured to Humboldt County in California, one of the most active cultivation regions in the United States. There, she immersed herself in the industry, learning from seasoned growers, processors, and distributors. This experience led to the co-founding of temporary cannabis labor firm People Need People and an executive role with Humboldt Brothers. Freya joined later, working with farms in Humboldt and Mendocino counties and forming deep ties within the local grassroots community.

Hudson Cannabis, born in 2017, stands as a testament to the intersection of regenerative farming and plant medicine. Located on a 580-acre regenerative farm in Hudson Valley, the brand grows heritage seeds in organic living soil and utilizes lunar cycles as part of their cultivation techniques.

“[Our plants are] farmed in living soil with the full power of the sun, and according to the cycles of the moon, to tap into the best of you,” the Dobsons explained

What sets the Dobson sisters apart is their intimate knowledge of cannabis cultivars (AKA strains), shaped by their years in California’s Emerald Triangle.

“As with wine, grapes, and coffee beans, there are different species and varieties of cannabis flower,” they explained. “Farming in accordance with the cycles of the moon, matched with genetics most adapted to the Hudson Valley, can lead to the most complex and consistent cannabinoid and terpene profiles, creating the best possible experience for New Yorkers.”

Hudson Cannabis cultivates, processes, and packages all their flower on-site in the Hudson Valley, north of New York City.

“By controlling the entire production process… we maintain consistency and quality while minimizing waste and creating additional revenue streams,” the Dobson sisters shared.

Hudson Cannabis products include flower, pre-rolls, hash, and edibles.

Soft Power Sweets

Ericka Wadleigh, the co-founder and marketing manager of vegan edibles company Soft Power Sweets, brings close to a decade of small business marketing experience to the cannabis industry. The company is an offshoot of Lagusta’s Luscious, one of the first dedicated-vegan chocolate shops in the United States. With deep-seated support for the legacy cannabis industry, Ericka’s venture into cannabis also marks her foray into business ownership.

“Our main focus as a business is ethics and integrity, and we pride ourselves on never cutting corners when it comes to selecting high-quality and ethically sourced ingredients,” Ericka shared.

In addition to their commitments to ethical sourcing, eco-packaging, and veganism, Ericka says a big part of their story lies in the people behind the brand.

“We are a group of four, all with long-time ties within New York State,” she noted. “We are based in the Hudson Valley now, but we have personal ties to Long Island, New York City, Western New York, and the Adirondacks. This industry has united the state, and being able to connect with fellow New Yorkers to understand the industry and lift each other up has been priceless.”

The Soft Power Sweets lineup currently includes chocolate-covered caramels, matcha latte caramels, and cherry chocolate bars.
